Chelsea have ideal Euro 2020 opportunity to identify their long-term Thiago Silva replacement

Chelsea may have just been crowned as the Champions of Europe for a second time, but in order to properly challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season, the club will need to address some areas of their squad.

A few positions have been identified as ones that need further strengthening – primarily up-front and central defence – and with the backing of owner Roman Abramovich likely, they’re bound to get at least one or two of their desired targets.

There are also plenty of players going to the rescheduled Euro 2020 – which starts tonight – who could be of interest to the Chelsea hierarchy.

Here are seven names who may be worth a closer look for the Blues.

Niklas Sule – Germany
The 25-year-old’s contract at Bayern Munich expires in the summer of 2022 and the Bundesliga giants could be tempted to sell the defender this summer if a sufficient offer comes in.

Chelsea have just extended Thiago Silva’s current deal by one year, but the 36-year-old isn’t getting any younger and the club will need to think about a long-term replacement sooner rather than later.

Ben White – England
White has been linked with a move to west London in the past, but now might just be the right time to tempt Brighton with an offer.

He’s been impressive since returning to the Seagulls after a successful loan spell at Leeds, and given that he can play as a centre-back or a defensive midfielder, his versatility could be of use to Thomas Tuchel.

The MEN report that Brighton have set a price of £50million to sign the 23-year-old.

Raphael Varane – France
With just one year left on his remaining contract, Chelsea and Manchester United have been encouraged to sign the Los Blancos defender this summer.

It’s rumoured that it would take around £60m to make the deal happen, and former Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman believes the experienced centre-back is worth that fee, and it’s easy to see why.As a World Cup and four-time Champions League winner, Varane is one of the very best defenders in the game and it could be worth the expensive investment.

Declan Rice – England
Despite being released from Chelsea at a young age, there is a high chance that the Englishman would be interested in a move to the club.

Academy graduate and fan favourite, Mason Mount, is Rice’s closest friend in football, and the two will get to experience what it’s like to regularly play together when they represent England at the Euros.

Perhaps agent Mount will spend some of his time in the England camp trying to convince his best friend to seal a move to west London.

Jadon Sancho – England
It’s one of the most spoken about transfer sagas in football over the last couple of seasons, but Sancho could be exactly who Chelsea need to sharpen their forward line.

Sancho is known to have been a Chelsea fan growing up, and has admitted that he doesn’t know what his future holds.

That being said, it is believed that Manchester United are confident of signing the Borussia Dortmund star, and have identified him as their top transfer target.

Marco Veratti – Italy
It’s rumoured Tuchel has told Chelsea bosses that he would like to be reunited with the central-midfielder in west London.

The duo worked together during Tuchel’s two-and-a-half year spell in the French capital and the German is a big fan of the qualities he brings to the table.

However, PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino probably won’t be keen on the idea of losing the Italian international.
