Chelsea will only bid for Borussia Dortmund hitman Erling Haaland if they feel the player really wants to join them, it has been claimed. The Norway international is a top transfer target for Thomas Tuchel. And though a deal will be tricky, the Blues are still hopeful a deal can be struck.
Chelsea won the Champions League last season, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final to reach the promised land.
But the Blues are now setting their sights on more silverware, with Tuchel desperate for Haaland to be signed.
That’s certainly understandable, with the 20-year-old netting a remarkable 40 goals across all competitions last term.
As things stand, Chelsea are yet to make an offer for Haaland – despite reports to the contrary emerging over the last few days.
And Eurosport’s Dean Jones, speaking on The Football Terrace podcast, has claimed Chelsea are waiting for the green light before making their move.
“Chelsea’s thought is ‘what if we offered double that (his £66m release clause) now,” he said.
“I spoke to people at Dortmund and that’s the only way they see them having their heads turned over this situation.
“Because you’re saying ‘right now, we can get double the money we’d get in a year that’s much closer what his actual evaluation is.’”
And he then added: “Look, Haaland’s advisors have been told that the club still have no intention to let him leave this summer.
“That’s the stance right now. But, as I said with Jack Grealish, there’s always a figure. Always a figure that changes these things.
“And we’ll have to see whether Chelsea actually decide they’ll go and do it.
“And they’ll only decide to go and make an offer like that, first of all, if they’re absolutely convinced Haaland wants to join them.
“They’re not going to waste their time otherwise. They’ve been working really hard on that for a few months, even gone and become champions of Europe to make sure he’ll be happy at the club.”
Jones also revealed Chelsea were still eyeing Romelu Lukaku, admitting that deal was being worked on ‘in the background’ at the current moment in time.
And whether they’re able to acquire either striker remains to be seen, with Inter Milan and Dortmund both unwilling to sell their prized assets.
Meanwhile, former Blues star Emmanuel Petit recently had his say on Haaland.
And he claimed his old side should do everything possible to acquire the Dortmund star, saying: “I’ll keep it simple.
“Olivier Giroud is on his way out of Chelsea, Tammy Abraham is probably leaving on loan, and Timo Werner is still struggling to score goals consistently and Kai Havertz is not a striker.
“Chelsea need a new striker and someone who scores lots of goals. Erling Haaland is the answer.
“He’s strong, powerful and young with a bright future in front of him.
“Haaland’s value is already very high, and connections with Tuchel increase his chance of joining Chelsea.
“Offensively, he could become the finisher that Chelsea really need. “I can imagine his relationship with [Mason] Mount, Havertz, [Christian] Pulisic and [Hakim] Ziyech making him score lots of goals at Stamford Bridge.
“Chelsea need a top striker, it’s as simple as that.”
Chelsea aren’t alone in admiring Haaland.
Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid all rate the forward as well – but appear to have other priorities at the current moment in time.
