Romelu Lukaku is now Chelsea’s number one summer transfer target, according to The Telegraph. Thomas Tuchel has turned his attention to the former Blues man after abandoning plans to sign Erling Haaland.
Lukaku possibly has unfinished business with Chelsea. He spent time at the club as a youngster but made just 15 first-team appearances and failed to score a goal.
He is now seen as one of the most feared marksmen in world football. Last season, he helped Inter claim the Serie A title and in total, he’s scored 64 goals in 95 appearances for the club.
Talks have taken place already. Inter have insisted that Lukaku won’t be sold. It was claimed by Fabrizio Romano that a bid of £100 million, plus Marcos Alonso was knocked back by the Italian outfit.
Chelsea are undeterred though. They believe they can prise their former striker back to the Premier League and are desperate to bolster their ranks.
The Blues have a strong relationship with Lukaku’s agent, Federico Pastorello. He has convinced the club that a deal is still worth pursuing.
The ex-striker has earned praise previously. Ashley Cole defended his time at Stamford Bridge, calling him ‘quality’. His teammate last season, Ashley Young called him ‘incredible’ following a Europa League performance for the Italian outfit.
Lukaku would be an amazing signing for Chelsea
At 28, the former Blues player is now in his prime. There is a lot of water under the bridge since he was last at Stamford Bridge and he could now thrive.
Lukaku is a real physical presence in attack and his ability to score different types of goals would surely delight Tuchel.
The striker earns £200,000-a-week at the San Siro and Chelsea shouldn’t have an issue with that sort of salary.
Landing a world-class centre forward could be the difference between challenging for the title and another season of competing for a top-four finish.
As a result, signing Lukaku looks like a no-brainer.
